Submitting your college application is a significant milestone in your educational journey!
But what happens next? Nicole Kelman, an IEC and former admissions counselor at Brandeis, Muhlenberg, Stony Brook, and Bentley, gave us the real deal.
Confirmation of Receipt
Once you hit that submit button, you should receive a confirmation email from the college. This acknowledgment is crucial, letting you know your application was received. If you don’t receive a confirmation within a week, following up with the admissions office is a good idea.
Application Review Process
After confirmation, your application will be processed for review. Admissions officers will review your application, assessing your academic performance, test scores, essays, and letters of recommendation. This process can vary in length depending on the school and the volume of applications it receives. As Nicole discusses in the talk, larger universities have significantly less time to review applications than small or medium-sized colleges.
Interviews
Some colleges might offer interviews as part of the admissions process. If your chosen school does this, you might be contacted to schedule an interview. This is your chance to express your interest in the school further and provide additional insights into your personality and goals. You can check admissions websites to book an interview if they’re offered. It’s a great way to show demonstrated interest.
Decision Notification
Typically, colleges notify applicants of their decisions around the same time, through letters or electronic communication. Most decisions are provided through the applicant portal. Students receive an email that their application has been updated. This could happen anywhere from a few weeks to several months after the submission deadline. Remember to check applicant portals often!

If you're accepted, congratulations! You'll receive further instructions on accepting your offer of admission, including submitting a deposit. Be sure to follow all steps and timelines provided, as these will set you up for success in your transition to college. May 1st is National Decision Day, and you must submit your deposit by that date.
